From the Author
“It was the adventure of a lifetime” says Gerret Kalkoffen, author of the new book Plan & Go: The John Muir Trail. After 15 days, Gerret and his good friend Josh had hiked over 222 miles. Their adventure began in Yosemite Valley and ended at the top of Mt. Whitney, the highest peak in the continental US. By then they had ascended and descended over 90,000 ft. “I love to go hiking, but had never gone backpacking for more than three days in a row. Preparing for the John Muir Trail took a lot of research and effort. I wanted to make my findings and experiences available to anyone who is toying with the idea of hiking the JMT and tell them, they should go for it!”, says Gerret.

Hiking the John Muir Trail is not an easy feat – it typically takes around 15 days of hiking and often for numerous days without being able to resupply food or water. Temperatures vary from close to freezing at night to hot and dusty during the day. But rewards are plentiful: among the highlights is climbing to the top of 14,505 ft high Mount Whitney, the highest mountain in the continental US. Planning this trip in detail is key to a successful and enjoyable hike.
Like the title suggests, the book is split into two major parts: planning the trip and a detailed account of the journey. This first part goes into great detail to explain what equipment options are available and what the pros/cons of a particular option might be (e.g. water disinfection, fuel, tents, shoes, meals). In addition, food/meals are covered in detail, going so far as providing meal plans for balanced and varied eating during the trip. The second part of the book takes you along the journey of hiking the John Muir Trail with detailed and colorful descriptions of the marvel you will witness when you hike the trail. This part really makes you want to start planning the hike immediately.
Plan & Go: The John Muir Trail: is a great and very helpful book. Even though it goes through planning and preparation in great detail (the author is a German engineer!) it is never difficult or tedious to read. Quite the contrary: there are so many insights (often mistakes the author has made and now honestly shares) – that I looked forward to continue reading. It really is like a cookbook, following the easy instructions will make this trip a success. Reading the second part, I had the feeling of walking along with the author along the trail – his descriptions are that clear and vivid.
